Save New Jersey's Parks!

Governor Corzine’s proposed budget includes a devastating 15% cut to the Department of Environmental Protection’s budget. On April 1st the DEP announced that as a result of the proposed cuts, nine state parks would be closing and three others would close sections or reduce hours.

Write your legislators today (sample letter) and tell them that this is not an acceptable way to resolve New Jersey’s budget crisis! They should not approve a budget that includes these cuts.

Want to do more? Write a brief letter to the editor (talking points) and send it to your local newspaper and one or more regional or statewide papers. Please contact Becca Glenn at becca.glenn@sierraclub.org if you would like a list of regional and statewide publications and their contact information.

Conservancy’s World Series of Birding Team Will Try to Set New Record

Members of the “Highlands Hawks” - the Conservancy’s birding team, led by Captain Dennis Miranda - will participate in the 25th Annual World Series of Birding on Saturday, May 10th. Armed with binoculars and spotting scopes, the team will be combing the state with one objective in mind: identifying as many species of birds as possible in a 24-hour period.

This celebrated, annual event, sponsored by the New Jersey Audubon Society, focuses world attention on New Jersey’s wealth of natural resources and the strategic importance of New Jersey to migrating birds, and helps organizations like the Conservancy raise funds to protect natural habitat.

You can help sponsor our team -- with a pledge of $1 or $2 or even 25 cents a bird. The more birds our team identifies, the more dollars they raise toward our land preservation goals. Last year our team spotted and identified a record 218 birds and came in fifth place overall! They hope to top that record this year.

For more information, or to make a pledge, please contact Barbara McCloskey at the Conservancy at (973) 541-1010 x14.
